• Our vision

“I want to create a place where anyone can be inspired surrounded by tranquillity and nature.”

    Kari Kola

Our vision is created on long-term plans, and our aim is to be an internationally recognised travel destination. The project is still in the beginning phase. The next years, we’ll be focusing on upgrading the outdoor gardens.

We will triple the indoor gardens in the next ten years. We’ll start to create large scale nature elements at the outside gardens. Big changes take time. This means we need to take it slow – which is by no means a problem because we are not interested in building as fast and as cheaply as possible. Instead, we do nearly everything ourselves. Kari is involved in everything and steers the garden towards his vision.

We have held more than 20 exhibitions since 2018, as well as almost 100 events, and through this we have laid the foundation for increasing the diversity of artgardens. We’re just getting started with everything and the whole thing is being promoted on a daily basis, so Botania is changing rapidly and you’re sure to notice new changes every time you visit.

The future seems bright for Botania and the team has a long-term plan for the garden. One special feature of Botania is that it’s the northernmost tropical butterfly garden in the world. The seasonal difference in the temperatures makes it a unique experience as the outside temperature may be -30 degrees and inside the greenhouse, the temperature is +25 degrees.

Botania is also a place for art and artists; the many wonders of nature invite you to come and be inspired. It will take a long time to reach the final goal, and we have made 10-, 30- and 60-year plans from now on. These plans are implemented and taken forward by the Botania team on a daily basis. Botania is the only private botanical garden in the Nordic countries that does not operate with state, university or city funds, but the economy is based on ticket revenue and customer flows.

Plans for the future

  • Some of our plans for the future:

    Surroundings

Keeping a tropical garden up north brings significant challenges with energy efficiency and heating systems. At the moment, only our heating costs are about 100,000 € / year, and we are researching solutions that will allow us to produce all our necessary energy ourselves later on. In order to find the right solutions, we have taken advantage of our extensive network and found out what kind of hybrid solutions for energy have been implemented elsewhere. Our goal is 100% energy self-sufficiency over the next 10 years.

    Premises

We are currently building a more detailed plan to expand our facilities. We are also constantly planning different ways to modernize the greenhouse, as well as improve information and plant growth conditions. We want our visitors to have even better access to information about our plants. Our goal is to triple the size of our indoor gardens over the next 12 years.

    Inspiration

We are also developing the garden strongly from the point of view of art. Botania is set to become a meeting place for artists and art lovers. One of the core purposes of our garden is to inspire people, and we plan to host more artist meetings where art and different people can meet and find inspiration to create interesting things.

“There are very few places where artists from all over the world can freely come together and be inspired by the sheer diversity of the place. Many great ideas stay stuck in your mind, because of peoples busy lives. Understandably, there is often no time just to sit down with others and talk, but especially in the post-covid period, it is more important than ever to connect with others and help each other, as everyone has had challenges. We want to provide a place and time for everyone to meet each other, enjoy nature and allow ideas and inspiration to flow without a bigger agenda. ”
